Vawdon Grand Final Week – Grand Final Preview 31.10.13
The Sea Eagles will be looking to write their way into the history books, aiming for the clubs first Women’s Opens Vawdon Cup title when they take on the Eastern Suburbs Roosters this Saturday at the Tempe Velodrome.  The Roosters deserve the upmost respect as they are the reigning Vawdon & State Cup Champions.  Additionally they are undefeated this season however Wollongong pushed them in the semi-final only to go down by a single touchdown.  For the Roosters they obviously have the best female player in the game at present in Ash Quinlan.  Ash deservedly won both the NSWTA Junior & Senior Female Player of the Year at the recent Blues Awards, an awesome achievement.  Additionally Maddie Studdon is a very talented young player on the rise.  Her central partnership with Ash will have to be closely monitored by the Manly defenders as the game could be potentially won or lost there.  Finally, add to their line-up the experience of Kristy Judd, Kristin Boss & Megan Campbell and it’s a very dangerous team.  The two teams met earlier in the Vawdon Cup season when the Roosters got the win by 5-4 and additionally in last year’s Vawdon Cup semi-final when the Roosters also got the victory and went on to take out the title.

For the Sea Eagles confidence and self-belief is at a sky-high after a season of excellent attacking and some courageous defending.  The Maroon & Whites are coming off a tense drop-off win over the Canterbury Bulldogs, in a game where all their determination was tested to come back from a two touchdown deficit in the second half.  All of this achieved without their injured Captain Sarah Peattie, and additionally without regular middle Rachael Cleave.  A very proud Elesha Dougal retains the Captaincy for the Grand Final with all players aware they will need to raise their game again to match it with the Roosters.   Laura Peattie was Player of the Match in the semi-final – taking her game to new heights.  Tayla Clifford also stole the show, and in only her third Premier League appearance she went a long way to winning it for Manly.  Tayla was closely followed by the teams natural on-field leaders in Brittney McLeod, Hannah Dyball and the ever determined Justine Johnston.  Add to this Danni Davis who will be primed and ready for her biggest game in a number of seasons.  A real performer this year has been Bec Beath, who has taken her opportunity in Premier League with both hands and is surely knocking on the door for higher representative honours.  The Sea Eagles strength is their number of dangerous attacking options across the park – not having to rely on just one or two players.  This includes Jenna Hitch who has reinvented her game – moving from link to middle, and has probably been the most disciplined role player in the team this season.   Moving out wide and Chloe Cheney has been in fantastic finals form, showing flair in attack and hardness in defence.  Probably the secret to Manly’s success this season has been the strong form of their wingers.  This week Sam Rodgers, Yasmin Meakes, Georgia Wallace and Zara Nicholas will form this partnership, one that is vital for Manly’s chances of success.

So the stage is set for a cracker of a Grand Final with both teams ready to perform in the sunshine that is a Saturday afternoon Vawdon Cup Grand Final.  Special mention and best of luck to the Manly Men’s Division 3 team who will be competing in their Grand Final earlier in the day.  Hopefully both teams can get wins and celebrate in style.   Go Manly!

Sea Eagles Premier League Charge Into The Vawdon Cup Grand Final 26.10.13
The Canterbury Velodrome at Tempe was once again the venue, this week for the Vawdon Cup Semi Finals.  In Premier League the girls were up against the undefeated Canterbury Bulldogs and Division 1 were matched against the Berkeley Vale Panthers.  The Premier League line-up was missing its Captain Sarah Peattie and Rachael Cleave, both through injury at the worst time of the season.  In their place came young-gun Tayla Clifford with Elesha Dougal taking on the honour of leading the side on one of its biggest nights.

The game commenced with the Bulldogs having possession of the ball and they got off to the perfect start scoring out wide from the tap off.  Manly looked to hit back quickly but a few errors through some obvious big match nerves meant that the Bulldogs had the better of the first 10 minutes.  To the Sea Eagles credit they weathered the storm and even though Canterbury had a number of opportunities to add to their tally, the Manly defence stuck solid.  For Manly Justine Johnston, Hannah Dyball, Brittney McLeod, and Laura Peattie were leading by example with Jenna Hitch and Chloe Cheney also looking at their best.   Captain Elesha Dougal was once again looking dangerous in attack and then on the 11 minute mark Manly nerves were somewhat eased when Jenna Hitch set-up Sam Rodgers who added to her impressive season tally of touchdowns.

Five minutes later Laura Peattie and Danni Davis capped off big first halves when they combined, this time with Danni Davis scoring a classy trademark diving touchdown.  The Sea Eagles were now running fast and hard and the Bulldogs were looking to tire at the backend of the half.  However to their credit the Dogs scored again near half time to make it 2-2 at the break.

The half time break was welcomed by both teams after an end to end exciting first stanza.  In the second half the Bulldogs came out firing again with Louise & Claire Winchester involved in all of their attacking raids.  Early in the second half Canterbury took the lead 3-2 and then with 12 minutes of the game remaining they extended their lead to 4-2.  The Bulldogs must have now been feeling this was their night however this lifted Manly even more.  Now more than ever in their number of years together it was time for the Sea Eagles to stand up and delivery.  And that they did – with 10 minutes remaining the Sea Eagles box rose together as one spurring each other to greater heights with every drive and touch made.  Their belief was rewarded when Tayla Clifford scored a great individual touchdown to cut the deficit to one.  Manly were now looking faster and fitter with the Bulldogs noticeably struggling to keep up.

A few Manly roll ball errors gave Canterbury chances to score again, however the Sea Eagles defence was amazingly strong.  Then with 6 minutes remaining the flying Zara Nicholas out-paced two defenders within the Manly half to score a crucial touchdown.  It was now all level at 4-4, with the Sea Eagles looking strong and knowing maybe just one more touchdown would give them the game.  With 3 minutes remaining Tayla Clifford capped of a remarkable attacking performance by teaming up with Danni Davis, with Tayla scoring her second touchdown of the game.  It was now 5-4 with the Manly sub-box urging the team to hold on for the last 60 seconds.  As was the case all night the Bulldogs looked to their go-to players and with the hooter sounding in the background they scored in the corner to even it up at 5-5 and send the game into a thrilling drop off.

There was no time in the Manly camp to feel disappointment; it was now an opportunity to win the game from the tap-off, knowing one touchdown would give them the game.  From the recommencement even with 5 players on 5 the Sea Eagles couldn’t cross the line.  The crowd had now grown in number and the Bulldogs had their turn at scoring.  However as was the case all evening, when it was really required the Manly defence held rock solid.  Once again Louise & Claire Winchester, the masters of the drop-off, threw everything at the Sea Eagles, this time without any joy.  Two minutes had now passed and both teams were reduced down to 4 players each.  For the Sea Eagles Laura Peattie defied the pain looking to stay on as long as was possible.  Manly were now with the ball coming right off their scoreline and they knew they now had the upper hand, driving very well to the box with Bec Beath making a huge impact with a pacey weaving run.  This gave Laura Peattie some much appreciated space and she rose to the challenge finding the unmarked Hannah Dyball who scored in the corner to send the Sea Eagles into jubilation and into their first Vawdon Cup Grand Final.

The feeling post match was of satisfaction, having defeated the experienced Bulldogs and now looking ahead to next Saturday.  For Manly there were quality performances all over the park with players stepping up to fill the large void with the team missing Sarah Peattie and Rachael Cleave.  Hannah Dyball was once again excellent – driving with purpose and speed, along with Chloe Cheney who played yet another strong game.  Add to this Elesha Dougal, Jenna Hitch and Justine Johnston whose positive talk in the sub-box was infectious.  Brittney McLeod was once again at her best when it counted, shrugging off an injury just before half time to once again show her true toughness.  Laura Peattie stepped up in the absence of sister Sarah and Danni Davis once again chimed in with great impact when required.  As is always the case the Sea Eagles out-wide players in Sam Rodgers, Yasmin Meakes, Georgia Wallace and Zara Nicholas all provided amazing vocal support for their team mates. Add to this some fantastic support for all the team from the sideline by Nicky Albery. In the other semi-final the Wollongong Devils never gave up, narrowly going down to the Roosters by 6-5.  This means the 2013 Vawdon Cup Grand Final will be a matchup between the Sea Eagles and Roosters.

In Division 1 the Sea Eagles were up against it without five of their more senior players, and playing against a strong team in Berkeley Vale.  In a close battle the Panthers had enough in attack to get the win over the Sea Eagles by 6-4.  After the game special thanks was made to the Division 1 Manly girls, without many of their players playing for Premier League at various times throughout the season, it would not have been possible for Premier League to make it to the Grand Final.  For the Sea Eagles Steph Maiolo, Shellie Davis and Jess Fowler all led from the front with all the girls giving it their all tonight and throughout the season.  A great result from the Division 3 Men’s Manly team saw them book their place in the Grand Final by defeating Canterbury 5-3.  They will meet the Liverpool Lightning next week in their Grand Final before the Women's Premier League Grand Final.

The 2013 Vawdon Cup finals had arrived and for Week One of the Elimination Finals the Manly Sea Eagles appeared in both Premier League and Division 1.  In Division 1 the young Sea Eagles have had a disrupted season with injuries and a number of players being given opportunities in Premier League.  The good news was the team was back to near full strength and in recent weeks have welcomed back Kate Devlin, Jess Shanahan and additionally this week the speedy Jess Fowler.  Tonight the team took on the Northern Beaches Renegades and they started the game with the tap-off.  A number of early penalties against the Sea Eagles didn’t rattle them and on the 5th minute mark the pace machine that is Crystal Maguire scooped from acting half blowing the opposition defenders away to link up well with Kristie Leonard who scored.  2 minutes later the Sea Eagles were in again when Tayla Clifford did it all herself to score an excellent trademark low diving touchdown.  Both teams were looking to drive the ball strongly however the game was slowed down with a number of penalties being blown. On the 12 minute mark Northern Beaches scored to reduce the deficit to 2-1 to Manly and this is how it was at the half time break.

In the second half Manly were first to score after 4 minutes when a Tayla Clifford long ball found Teagan Wilson who finished well.  It was now 3-1 to Manly however the Renegades hit back a minute later from a break from half way.  The arm wrestle continued until Northern Beaches scored again now with 10 minutes of the game remaining.  It was a tense final stanza of the game with Emma Williams, Shellie Davis, Steph Maiolo and Tayla Clifford all leading by example looking to get their team the winner.  Right at the end of the game Manly looked to score however the hooter sounded and the Renegades received the ball for the drop-off right on their defensive line.  Northern Beaches drove the ball nicely however excellent defence from Manly held them out.  Manly then drove back with purpose and the play of the game was left for the end when Steph Maiolo showed her class with an excellent second phase dump setting it up for Tayla Clifford to find Jess Shanahan on the wing who finished in great style to give the Sea Eagles the game.  It was an exciting final with many strong performances including Tayla Clifford, Shellie Davis, Steph Maiolo, Jorja McDonald, Kate Devlin and Crystal Maguire just to name a few.  The team now progress to the semi-final next week where they meet the Berkeley Vale Panthers who they drew 8-8 with during the regular season.  In the other game the Roosters booked a show-down with the Panthers after beating Wallsend by 5-3.

It was 5-0 at the break and the message was to just keep it going.  In the second half the girls scored from the tap-off via Bec Beath and Sarah Peattie.  To Penrith’s credit they didn’t give in but for all their effort the Sea Eagles defence held solid.  With 9 minutes remaining Brittney McLeod once again showed her class hitting a perfect hole set-up via Justine Johnston and Hannah Dyball.  Then in the final minute Yasmin Meakes got on the scoreboard via Captain Sarah Peattie.  The final score was 8-0 and sets up a semi-final meeting with the Canterbury Bulldogs.  Manly narrowly went down by one touchdown when the teams last met however the Sea Eagles were missing up to five regular players due to the National Youth Championships.  For the Sea Eagles it was another fantastic team performance, the most pleasing aspect being the tenacious attitude displayed in defence.  Stand-out performances were once again Brittney McLeod, Chloe Cheney, Hannah Dyball, Georgia Wallace plus Sarah Peattie, Justine Johnston, Laura Peattie and Danni Davis all showed great leadership.  Special mention to Elesha Dougal who once again looked dangerous, however this week playing under illness. Vawdon Cup Round 12 Review 13.10.13
The last round before the final series took place Friday night at Bankstown and Malabar.  In Division 1 the girls were up against the Wallsend Wolves and a great performance just one week out from the finals saw a 4-0 victory.  There were strong performances all over the park with Emma Williams taking out the Sea Eagles Player of the Match.  Closely on her footsteps were Alex Wallace, Jorja McDonald, Steph Maiolo and Tayla Clifford who all had strong games.  The win means that the team finish in 3rd place after the regular season and this week will meet the Northern Beaches Renegades in Week One of the finals series.  In Premier League the team were reduced to 11 players through unavailability however the girls managed to play a near perfect first half against the Parramatta Eels to register a 7-0 lead at half time.  Hannah Dyball had a standout game and scored the first touchdown with handy foot-work after just 2 minutes.  A minute later Bec Beath scored after nice lead-up from sisters Sarah and Laura Peattie.  On the 10th minute mark the scooting Bec Beath blew the opposition away to set-up Laura Peattie for her first of her two touchdowns.  With 5 minutes remaining in the half Laura got her second when she teamed up nicely with Elesha Dougal.  One minute later Justine Johnston scored a great individual effort, only to be followed by Sarah Peattie who did likewise.  Then right on half-time Hannah Dyball set-up Sam Rodgers who expertly got away from her defender to score.  It was a huge first half and to Parramatta's credit they came out with more fire in the second and registered the only touchdown of the half in the first minute.  The game played out with the Sea Eagles looking to tire at the backend as a result of missing a few players, however they would settle for the solid win.  For Manly their two best were Hannah Dyball and Bec Beath.  Also strong was the driving and weaving Yasmin Meakes and as has been the story of the season Captain Sarah Peattie had another inspirational game.  Along with Justine Johnston and Rachael Cleave who's fantastic leadership was on show the entire game.  Special mention to wingers Sam Rodgers and Zara Nicholas who played the whole game without a substitution.  In Week One of the finals the team take on the Penrith Panthers who after a poor start to the season have strung together a number of wins to take 6th spot.  Both Division 1 and Premier League are at Tempe on Friday with match previews and team line-up available later in the week.

Vawdon Cup Round 11 Review 04.10.13
Round 11 of the Vawdon Cup continued tonight with both Premier League and Division 1 taking on the Northern Suburbs Bears at Pioneer Park.  Conditions were cold but dry with Premier League missing a few players including Jenna Hitch and Elesha Dougal.  The Bears themselves were missing some players due to the University Games, however they would still be up for a strong performance.  The game commenced and early on possession changed regularly due to many errors and penalties from both teams.  It wasn’t until near the 9th minute mark when Hannah Dyball combined with Sarah Peattie who continued her recent run of touchdowns to score again.  3 minutes later the flying Sam Rodgers scored with a trademark classy finish.   Danni Davis was next to score and when Bec Beath set-up Justine Johnston the Sea Eagles had raced to a 4-0 lead.  Then before the break Sam Rodgers got a double to make it 5-0 at half time.  In the second half Laura Peattie got the scoring underway when she combined well with sister Sarah.  For all of Norths hard work in attack the Manly defence held strongly.  Another strong performance by Player of the Match Brittney McLeod was rewarded with a touchdown after nice lead up from Danni Davis and Laura Peattie.  With 5 minutes remaining Laura Peattie scored another and then right on full time Justine Johnston secured her second to give the Sea Eagles a comfortable 9-0 victory.  Along with Brittney McLeod, Sarah Peattie and Danni Davis were solid, with Yasmin Meakes and Sam Rodgers playing strong team roles once again.  In Division 1 the team won 4-2 with Teagan Wilson and Maddie Hartmann both scoring doubles.  Crystal Maguire, Emma Williams and Alex Wallace all had standout games.  Next week is the final round before the final series, with Premier League meeting the Parramatta Eels and Division 1 taking on the Wallsend Wolves.

Vawdon Cup Round 8 Review 21.09.13
With half way of the 2013 Vawdon Cup reached, the Sea Eagles returned to Tempe this week for two tough games against the Roosters.  In Division 1 Manly met the Roosters who were sitting one point behind them in fourth place.  Manly were going to have do it the tough way with only 11 players in the starting line-up due to injuries and unavailability.  In a see-sawing game the Sea Eagles went down by 6-5 with a hat-trick of touchdowns to Steph Maiolo not enough for the Sea Eagles to get the win.  Kate Devlin, who was returning from injury, scored a double.  Best performers for the Sea Eagles were Emma Williams, Steph Maiolo and Tayla Clifford.  In Premier League the team were matched up against the current Vawdon & State Cup title holders, the Eastern Suburbs Roosters.  The Roosters were sitting second on the ladder, with the Sea Eagles welcoming back a number of players who were unavailable last week.  The game got underway on the Velodrome in perfect conditions and the Sea Eagles were first to score after 6 minutes when nice lead-up from Chloe Cheney and Elesha Dougal resulted in a touchdowns to Rachael Cleave.  The Roosters hit back a minute later only for Manly to once again take the lead when a nice Sarah Peattie long ball found Yasmin Meakes who scored unopposed in the corner.  Rachael Cleave then scooped from half, with the final pass just failing to find Yasmin Meakes.  Easts then scored again to even it up at 2-2 and the pattern of the remainder of the half was excellent defensive pressure by Manly whenever the Roosters tried to drive off their defensive line.  Nice team build-up by the Sea Eagles which created an overlap should have resulted in another touchdown before half time however it wasn’t to be. The second half commenced at 2-2 and although the Sea Eagles had a number of opportunities the Roosters defence was holding strong.  Easts scored with 10 minutes remaining and then again 2 minutes later to race to a 4-2 lead.  The Sea Eagles did hit back when Danni Davis set-up Georgia Wallace who scored.  Manly continued to pressure the Roosters scoreline and when the Roosters had a player removed from the field for a scoreline infrigment, the Sea Eagles looked to have gained the upper hand.  However they failed to convert and the game ended with a Roosters narrow victory 4-3.  Full credit to both teams on a real arm-wrestle of a game.  For the Sea Eagles, yet again Yasmin Meakes led the way with her energy and effective communication.  Additionally Rachael Cleave drove the ball with purpose all game, with Elesha Dougal, Laura and Sarah Peattie all looking creative.  There are no games next Friday night with the second of the Vawdon Cup d0uble headers set to take place at the Doyle Ground, North Parramatta next Sunday 29 September.

It was a big challenge for the Manly squad approaching Vawdon Cup Round 7 with 11 players unavailable due to the National Youth Champs in Queensland and another 4 out due to injury.  This meant that seven players were set to play back to back games, with the first battle against the high flying Canterbury Bulldogs.  For the Sea Eagles Crystal Maguire was making her Premier League debut, in what has been a pleasing theme for the season to date.  The Bulldogs started the game full of running and through a number of back to back penalties raced to a 2-0 lead.  Manly hit back after 12 minutes when Bec Beath set-up try scoring machine Jenna Hitch, only to have Canterbury score again and then Jenna Hitch secure a double with help from Captain Sarah Peattie.  It was now 3-2 and the Bulldogs looked to tire at the back end of the half.  However they scored two more touchdowns and Manly got three of their own in the space of 3 minutes.  Justine Johnston teamed up with Elesha Dougal who scored, and then excellent ball movement saw a brilliant pass from Alex Wallace find Tina Clancy who scored nicely in the corner.  Laura Peattie then set-up Crystal Maguire to make it 5-5 at the break.  Frustrating for the Sea Eagles was the large penalty count against them however the team tried to remain positive.  The second half was a better defensive display from both teams with Manly taking the lead 6-5 when the ever reliable Brittney McLeod scored after nice lead up from Jenna Hitch.  With State of Origin set to take place next year surely Brittney would not be out of place as a middle for the NSW Women’s Opens team, and it's time the selectors took note. The Bulldogs then evened it up again 6-6 with 12 minutes remaining.  Both teams continued to slog it out with the Bulldogs getting the winner with 9 minutes remaining.  Manly looked to have scored through a nice diving effort from the on-fire Bec Beath – however the on-field referee decided against.  Then Laura Peattie looked to play an advantage and score however this time the referee decided a penalty to the Sea Eagles was the best option.  Overall a great effort for the Sea Eagles with five last start Premier League players missing.   Time for the match post mortem was cut short with 7 players rushing off to an adjacent field for the Division 1 game against Taren Point.  In what proved to be a very tight game a hat-trick to Bec Beath proved to be the difference with Manly winning 6-5.  It was a display of great commitment from Bec, flying back from the Queensland NYC’s earlier in the day to put on another very impressive performance.  Everyone played their role helping the team get the win, with  other stand-outs being Yasmin Meakes who scored two touchdowns and Brittney McLeod who scored one herself.  Tully Mar also looks to be growing with confidence each week and is definitely a very talented player of the future.  Next week both teams return to Tempe with Premier League taking on the Vawdon & State Cup Champions in the Eastern Suburbs Roosters and Division 1 also playing the Roosters who are sitting in fourth place, one behind the Sea Eagles.

Vawdon Cup Super Sunday Rounds 5 & 6 Review 09.09.13
Once again this year Manly Warringah Touch Association hosted the September Vawdon Cup Double Header, and yet again it was a great day for the club.  It was a significant milestone for the Women’s Vawdon Cup squad with a number of senior players taking part in the first Division 1 game when the young Manly team took on the Parramatta Eels.  Such is the depth of the squad we are now in an extremely fortunate position when our Premier League players can play alongside our developing talent.  The first-up Division 1 game against the Eels was a tight affair for the first 10 minutes, however the Sea Eagles then started to take control with Brittney McLeod, Rachael Cleave and Justine Johnston showing great leadership with their presence rubbing off on the rest of the team.  For the Sea Eagles Crystal Maguire, Teagan Wilson and Jorja McDonald all had their strongest games of the season, with Crystal Maguire grabbing two touchdowns.  The Sea Eagles took out the game with a solid 9-1 victory.

The next game on the program was in Premier League where the Sea Eagles also took on the Parramatta Eels.  The Sea Eagles had Shellie Davis making her long awaited Premier League debut, whilst Tayla Clifford also received a well-deserved call up into the team after strong performances in Division 1 – with Tayla making her Premier League debut last season.  The game got underway in front of a great home crowd with Captain Sarah Peattie getting a touchdown in the 1st minute after combining well with Bec Beath, and then Laura Peattie 2 minutes later.  The Eels then hit back however Manly then scored again after 7 minutes when Shellie Davis scored a great individual and now trade-mark diving touchdown.  Once again the Eels hit back and it was now 3-2 to the Sea Eagles.  Manly weren’t playing at their best with Parramatta having the better field position and when the Sea Eagles sub box re-acted, their energy lifted.  Laura Peattie then teamed up with sister Sarah to score, and then Yasmin Meakes scored through nice lead up play via Laura Peattie.  With 16 minutes gone Laura Peattie then completed a remarkable first half hat-trick to make it 6-2 at the break.

In the second half Elesha Dougal and Danni Davis combined for Elesha to score and now Manly led 7-2.  Parramatta didn’t give up and scored through a nice individual effort by Kaitlin McCaffery.  The remainder of the game was a bit of a scrappy affair, the highlight of the second half being Tayla Clifford scoring two touchdowns with assistance from Danni Davis and the flying Bec Beath who is looking more at home in the top team with each game.  The Eels scored right on the hooter with the game ending up 9-4 to Manly.  For the Sea Eagles Sarah & Laura Peattie had big games, as did Sam Rodgers and Shellie Davis.  Whilst the Sea Eagles didn’t play their best game they would been pleased with the result.

Division 1 was the next game with arguably the top two teams in action with the Manly Sea Eagles up against the impressive Berkeley Vale Panthers. In what turned out to be a cracking game the lead changed on a number of occasions throughout the game.  The Sea Eagles led with only a minute remaining however the Panthers evened it up to take it to the Final Shot.  Berkeley Vale took the tap off and scored from their set of six, putting all the pressure on the young Sea Eagles.  Manly now needed to score to get a draw and the Player of the Match Shellie Davis capped off a truly amazing performance, bagging 4 touchdowns and getting the equaliser with the last play of the game.  There were a number of pleasing performances with Tully Marr, Kristie Leonard, Steph Maiolo, Tayla Clifford, Teagan Wilson and Paige French all having great games.  These teams will surely meet again come finals time with both teams having to be at their best to get the win.

The next game was a huge one for Manly, with the Premier League team taking on the Western Suburbs Magpies.  Wests have had big wraps from the touch pundits this year and it was going to be a great test for the Sea Eagles.  Manly started the game with the ball and nice play through Jenna Hitch saw Danni Davis score the first touchdown.  Manly then scored again when great vision by Hannah Dyball found the fired-up and hard running Elesha Dougal who got around her player to setup Zara Nicholas who scored in the corner.  Both teams were obviously up for a big game and the Magpies hit back after 5 minutes to make it 2-1 to Manly.  The Sea Eagles were struggling with a high penalty count against them however were determined to remain positive and continue the pressure on Wests.  After 12 minutes Hannah Dyball scored after Danni Davis carved up the defence with an excellent scoop from acting half.  Manly were now full of running and their sub box was full of positive loud talk.  After 17 minutes Brittney McLeod and Chloe Cheney linked up with the hot stepping Elesha Dougal who beat two defenders to score.  One minute later Danni Davis added to her tally when she outran her link to grab another touchdown – now making it 5-1.  With 2 minutes left on the clock Wests scored through Emily Hennessy only to have Manly hit back right on the half time break when a Sarah Peattie long ball found winger Yasmin Meakes who finished in style to make it 6-2 at the break.

The talk at half time was all positive with the Sea Eagles determined to back up an excellent half and go on with the job.   For the Sea Eagles the second half was another classy performance with Bec Beath scoring right through the middle of the defence.  Wests then scored with 9 minutes remaining, however Laura Peattie teamed up with Brittney McLeod for Peattie to score.  It was now 8-3 with Manly keen to keep up their running for the final 5 minutes.  For the Sea Eagles Hannah Dyball, Elesha Dougal and Rachael Cleave were driving the ball with great purpose, and when Danni Davis scooped through yet again she linked up with Zara Nicholas who did extremely well to lose her defender to score.  Then with 1 minute remaining the Sea Eagles hit 10 touchdowns with Sarah Peattie capping off a great day by scoring a classy diving effort.   Manly took out the win by 10-3 and it will once again give them great confidence as the season progresses.  Manly’s best had to be Elesha Dougal who looked a weapon in attack and solid in defence.  Hot on her heels were Yasmin Meakes who played a faultless game in both attack and defence, and yet again Danni Davis who is back to her best form after a number of injuries last season.  Laura Peattie continues to impress with her game going to the next level this season.  Additionally Justine Johnston played an excellent team game as did Chloe Cheney who was aggressive in defence and scheming in attack.  Last but not least Hannah Dyball who terrorised one of the game’s best attackers in Emily Hennessy, through her solid relentless defence all game.  The win sees the Sea Eagles sitting in third position on the table, with only the Bulldogs and Roosters ahead of them.

Vawdon Cup Round 4 Review 30.08.13
This week saw Round 4 of the Vawdon Cup with Premier League and Division 1 at different venues for the first time.  Premier League made the journey to Tempe for their game against the Northern Suburbs Bears.  Norths were promoted to Premier League this season and were looking for their first win of the season.  Manly welcomed Zara Nicholas into the line-up and were looking to get their third win of the season.  The game started with a tap off from Norths and Manly from the outset looked to be hungry and aggressive in defence.  Norths were winning the field position battle early on however when the Sea Eagles got to the other end on the 6 minute mark Danni Davis set-up Captain Sarah Peattie to make it 1-0.  Then after 10 minutes Danni Davis scored herself after a nice short side move.  Norths were looking to hit back however Manly's defence was looking too strong.  It was 2-0 at the break with the team definitely looking to up the ante in the second stanza.  That they most certainly did with Manly full of running and resulting in Hannah Dyball scoring after 2 minutes, and then Yasmin Meakes scored after great lead-up play by Hannah Dyball and Zara Nicholas.  Manly's defence continued to look strong with Zara Nicholas working extremely hard for her middles. Just before 10 minutes Justine Johnston scored from another set move, then Jenna Hitch scooped through to set-up Alex Wallace.  It was now 6-0 and Manly were looking a lot stronger in attack than the first half.  Sarah Peattie and Danni Davis were continually looking dangerous in attack with Rachael Cleave, Georgia Wallace and Yasmin Meakes excellent driving the team forward.  To North's credit they scored with 5 minutes remaining, however the Sea Eagles had time for two more touchdowns.  Firstly through a classy quarterback via Jenna Hitch and Sarah Peattie putting in Alex Wallace and then Danni Davis scored running half the field after the full-time hooter.  For the Sea Eagles it was a solid second half, scoring six well-constructed touchdowns.  For Manly Hannah Dyball was extremely strong, as to was Yasmin Meakes who led with excellent communication and enthusiasm. Additionally Zara Nicholas had a strong game, as did Georgia and Alex Wallace.  Once again Captain Sarah Peattie was a calming and leading influence.  The Sea Eagles now look forward to their Nolans Reserve double header where they will meet the Parramatta Eels and Western Suburbs Magpies.   In Division 1 Ellie May Asprey and Tully Marr made their debuts with the team taking on the undefeated Wallsend Wolves.  Strong performances yet again by Shellie Davis and Steph Maiolo weren't enough to assist the Sea Eagles with the team suffering their first loss of the season, going down 5-4 through the Final Shot (drop off).  Shellie Davis scored two and had a third disallowed which would have given the Sea Eagles the lead in the Final Shot, only to have Wallsend score themselves.  Also pleasing was Tully Marr who scored two touchdowns on debut.

Vawdon Cup Round 3 Review 23.08.13
Bankstown Touch was once again the venue for the Manly Sea Eagles this week with both teams up against the Penrith Panthers.  In Premier League there were a number of changes with Elesha Dougal and Brittney McLeod unavailable and Alex Wallace coming into the line-up.  The Panthers always fire up for the Sea Eagles and Manly were yet to secure a win over them in recent Vawdon Cup matches.  Manly's warm-up was a very good one and they started with the tap off.  The running game of the past few weeks was looking evident again tonight and after 6 minutes Danni Davis scored a touchdown after great lead-up play by young guns Chloe Cheney and Hannah Dyball.  4 minutes later Danni Davis was at it again, this time teaming up with Bec Beath making it 2-0.  The Sea Eagles defence was holding solidly and when Rachael Cleave set-up Alex Wallace 4 minutes before half-time, Manly went into the break with a handy 3-0 lead.  The second half was a more scrappy affair and to Penrith's credit they scored on the 11th and 15th minute marks.  Manly were looking to put them away through Laura Peattie, however the Panthers defence was holding strong.  Then right on the hooter the unpredictable Jenna Hitch set-up Laura Peattie was raced away untouched to give the Sea Eagles a 4-2 victory.  For Manly it wasn't the best second half, however all will be pleased with the three points.  Danni Davis and Sam Rodgers were amongst the best, along with Chloe Cheney, Hannah Dyball and once again Sarah Peattie who was busy all night.  Special mention to Yasmin Meakes who's energy was infectious, plus Bec Beath who showed great courage playing with obvious illness.  Next week the Sea Eagles take on the newly promoted Northern Suburbs Bears at Tempe.

In Division 1 the team welcomed a Vawdon Cup debut for Maddie Hartman, as they also took on the Penrith Panthers.  In what was a very tight game the girls did enough to get the win by 5-4 over a strong Penrith team.  For the Sea Eagles Shellie Davis got a hat-trick of fantastic touchdowns, Tayla Clifford scored yet another classy solo effort and Crystal Maguire, who is looking more comfortable with every game, scored one herself.  Best performers for Manly were Shellie Davis, Tayla Clifford and yet again Steph Maiolo who's defence was excellent.  Special mention to Jess Shanahan who yet again proved her toughness by playing injured.  Next week the team take on the Wallsend Wolves, once again at Bankstown Touch.

Vawdon Cup Round 2 Review 17.08.13
In Round 2 of the Vawdon Cup the Sea Eagles took on the Wollongong Devils with both teams coming off good first round victories.  Manly welcomed a Premier League debut to Steph Maiolo and Brittney McLeod was missing due to injury.  The Devils started with the tap off and a nice block play saw them score at link.  The Sea Eagles hit back straight away with a touchdown to Rachael Cleave.  Then after 7 minutes Wollongong took the lead again with the Sea Eagles hitting back right away with some smart play from the scheming Jenna Hitch who setup the flying Sam Rodgers in the corner.  Danni Davis was then involved setting up Jenna Hitch however the Devils once again hit back with Jess McCall involved in all their successful attacking raids.  Before the half time break the Sea Eagles raced to a 5-3 lead.  Danni Davis and Sarah Peattie setup Hannah Dyball who hit a beautiful hole to score one of the touchdowns of the season and then Jenna Hitch scored herself in a great individual effort.

The Sea Eagles had the tap off in the second half and really needed to inflict more pain on the Devils – however they couldn’t extend their lead.  The pattern of the game in the second half was similar to the first with some great attack and not so good defence.  Both teams were under extreme pressure on their line defence with a very high penalty count. To the credit of the Gong they scored back to back touchdowns to even it up; however Manly hit back when the hot stepping Elesha Dougal snapped the defence twice then passing to Sam Rodgers who finished it nicely. Laura Peattie then scored with 7 minutes to go with Manly now leading 7-5.  The Devils then scored on the 14th, 17th and 18th minutes to take an unexpected 8-7 lead.  However Manly weren’t done with yet and Sam Rodgers completed her hat-trick with 1 minute to go to even it up.  With time just about up it looked like the game was set to go into The Final Shot, however the Devils had one more trick up their sleeve when they managed to score with the hooter sounding to snatch a 9-8 victory.  It was most definitely a great game for the spectators with an amazing 17 touchdowns being scored.

Jess McCall was an absolute standout for Wollongong with the Sea Eagles reinforcing that their attack is the real deal in 2013.   There were many strong performances for the Maroon & Whites with Captain Sarah Peattie once again leading in great style.  Jenna Hitch had a faultless first half and backed it up with a leading role in the second.  Hannah Dyball continues to look as solid as a rock in both attack and defence and Elesha Dougal looked dangerous throughout the game.  Steph Maiolo had a great debut and once again Sam Rodgers proved she is one of the best wingers in the game with some classy finishing.  Rachael Cleave, Danni Davis and Chloe Cheney also had pleasing games in an all-round solid team effort.

Next week both the Premier League and Division 1 take on the Penrith Panthers once again at Bankstown Touch.

Vawdon Cup Round 1 Review 12.08.13
The Sea Eagles new season of the 2013 Vawdon Cup got underway on Friday evening at Bankstown Touch.  In Premier League the team was taking on the Varsity Stingers with a well-deserved debut being awarded to Bec Beath.  Bec was a strong performer at the recent TFA Elite 8 tournament and has impressed all in Sea Eagles pre-season training. Twelve players from the 2012 State Cup team appeared in the line-up with Georgia Wallace getting a promotion back into Premier League.  The game got underway in excellent conditions with the Sea Eagles full of running and looking to promote the ball where possible.  It was the perfect start after just 3 minutes with Laura Peattie getting a touchdown and then Georgia Wallace doing likewise in the corner.  Manly were looking very confident and when Brittney McLeod, Georgia Wallace and Chloe Cheney all scored the lead had raised to 5-0 after just 12 minutes.  Varsity were looking to get on the scoreboard however the Manly defence was vocal, loud and held strong.  Captain Sarah Peattie, Jenna Hitch and Danni Davis were all having very strong games looking to dominate where possible.  Bec Beath was running well and set-up a quality touchdown via a scoop from half.  Before half time four more touchdowns to Georgia Wallace, Laura Peattie, Danni Davis and Sam Rodgers meant that Manly were up by 9-0 at the break.  The half time talk was extremely positive and the challenge was to go on with the job in the second half.  In the second half it was much of the same with Rachael Cleave, Danni Davis, Yasmin Meakes and Sam Rodgers all scoring within 10 minutes.  Then Yasmin Meakes, Laura Peattie and Sam Rodgers all scored again with Manly taking the win by 16-0.  Obviously pleasing was the scoreline however the extremely low error rate and strong defensive effort paved the way for the win.  To the credit of Varsity they didn’t give up and will be stronger as the season progresses.  For the Sea Eagles there were strong performances all over the park.  Bec Beath on debut had a strong game, Laura Peattie looked dangerous every time she got the ball, Danni Davis looked back to her best setting up a number of touchdowns, Chloe Cheney worked hard in defence and also looked dangerous in attack, Jenna Hitch played a technically excellent game and Sarah Peattie played a perfect Captain’s role in attack and defence.  The team take on the Wollongong Devils next after they got their season off to winning ways beating the Penrith Panthers by 9-4.

In Division 1 the Sea Eagles were up against one of the stronger teams from last season in the Central Coast Dolphins.  For the Sea Eagles Paige French, Crystal McGuire, and Kristie Leonard were all making their Vawdon Cup debuts.  The game was a tight battle for most of the first half however in the second Manly got on top of the Dolphins and took the win 5-0.  For the Sea Eagles Steph Maiolo, Tayla Clifford and Alex Wallace were all stand out performers.  Additionally Zara Nicholas and Shellie Davis looked strong.  Touchdown scorers were Jorja McDonald with a double, Crystal McGuire, Shellie Davis, and also Paige Fench who was awarded the Dee Why RSL Coaches Award.  Next round the girls have a bye so will next play in two weeks against the Penrith Panthers.
