Vawdon Cup Finals Week 1 Review 22.10.12
Bankstown was the venue for Week 1 of the 2012 Vawdon Cup finals. In Premier League the Manly Sea Eagles were up against the Wallsend Wolves. The Sea Eagles recently defeated the Wolves 4-1 however this would count for little in what was expected to be a very tough elimination final. The Manly team's preparation was excellent and they additionally welcomed back big guns – Sarah Peattie, Elesha Dougall and Nicky Albery who missed last week's 8-0 win over Taren Point. Laura Peattie would also be full of confidence following her recent NSWTA Junior Player of the Year Award.
The game commenced with Manly on the attack and from the first set of six looked to be running hard and with intent. After just two minutes excellent ball movement from Sarah Peattie, Chloe Cheney, Justine Johnston looked to have put Yasmin Meakes scoring in the corner however it was disallowed. Then following a repeat set Captain Sarah Peattie scored an individual low diving touchdown to give the Sea Eagles the perfect start. Then on the 8th minute mark it was Laura Peattie's turn to score with another individual effort. Manly then went to a 3-0 lead after 15 minutes when Rachael Cleave set-up Elesha Dougall. Strong Manly defence was frustrating Wallsend with Brittney McCleod and Hannah Dyball once again leading the way in the middle of the field. Keen to extend their lead it looked like the Sea Eagles had done this when Nicky Albery scooped through for Elesha Dougall to score, however a penalty was awarded in favour of Manly instead of the touchdown. From the penalty great ball movement stretched the Wallsend defence with Justine Johnston finding Alex Wallace in the corner to score. Then on the stroke of half time Manly capped off an impressive 20 minutes with Rachael Cleave scoring to make it 5-0.
With nothing to lose in the second half Wallsend came out full of running and on the 28 and 30 minute marks scored back to back touchdowns. Manly were leading 5-2 and still looking to extend their lead, however the Wallsend defence was now holding strong. Then with 6 minutes remaining a Manly player was given a strange period of time when in possession of the ball driving forward. This had a huge impact on the game for the final minutes with Wallsend scoring two touchdowns with Manly down to 5 players. However the damage had been done with an excellent first half and the Sea Eagles took out the game by 5-4. There were a number of strong performances with Sarah Peattie, Elesha Dougall, Justine Johnston and Rachael Cleave all influential in the win. Additionally Alex Wallace defended extremely well and scored a nice touchdown to add. Nicky Albery continues to be on the rise since her return and Brittney McLeod continues to display her toughness each week. The Sea Eagles will now meet the Easts Roosters in the Semi Final this Friday 26th October with a preview later in the week.
In Division 1 the young Manly team put on a great team performance beating the UNSW Bullets by an impressive 5-1. There were strong games from all players in a fantastic team effort. Scorers for the Sea Eagles included Bec Beath, Jess Shanahan, Tayla Clifford, Steph Maiolo, and Zara Nicholas. Jess Shanahan leads the Division 1 touchdown scorers with a very impressive 11 touchdowns. The team will meet Norths this week in what should be a close semi final. Manly will hopefully be welcoming back Shellie Davis from injury and should have all players available for selection.

Vawdon Cup Friday 28th Sept Review 29.09.12
The Manly Sea Eagles were sitting in third place and this week up against the Wallsend Wolves at Doyle Ground, the home of Parramatta Touch. After narrowly going down to the Wollongong Devils 3-2 in their last outing, the Manly girls were looking forward to a very tough battle against a quality opposition. The Sea Eagles were missing their Captain Sarah Peattie and Danni Davis, both out to injuries. Additionally Hannah Dyball was absent and in her place slotted the reliable Tayla Clifford, making her 2012 Premier League debut.
The game started at a frantic pace with both teams looking to promote the ball and build pressure on the opposition. The majority of the first half was a very tight arm wrestle with both teams not prepared to concede a touchdown. However the Sea Eagles were the first to score when NSWTA 2012 Junior of the Year nomination Laura Peattie made it 1-0 through a nice individual effort on the 16 minute mark.
Manly were playing with high energy and the sub-box reflected this. Justine Johnston and Elesha Dougall were looking dangerous in attack with Tayla Clifford and Chloe Cheney very strong in defence. However to Wallsend’s credit they hit back with 2 minutes to go to even it up 1-1 at the break.
In the second half the Sea Eagles were determined to finish strongly and were looking extremely focused to do so. They thought they’d scored early on through Brittney McLeod however it was disallowed. On the 24th minute mark Manly went to a 2-1 lead with great lead-up work by Elesha Dougall and Justine Johnston, with Chloe Cheney diving over to score a well-deserved touchdown. The Wolves were keen to even it up again however the high intensity Manly defence was causing frustration leading to a number of poor passes and drop balls.
The Sea Eagles made it 3-1 on the 30 minute make when Hogs Breath Player of the Season leader, Elesha Dougall scored through a quality scoop by Nicky Albery – who looks to be growing with confidence in each game. Manly were finishing the game strongly and then wrapped it up when Player of the Match Justine Johnston scored a stepping individual effort to make it a comprehensive 4-1 victory.
There were many stand-out performances for the Sea Eagles, with Tayla Clifford and Brittney McLeod strong in the middle. Captain Jenna Hitch played a solid role, as did Sam Rodgers and Yasmin Meakes who strong vocally and in the roll-ball when it mattered.
In Division 1 the Manly team defeated the UNSW Bullets by 4-0. Standout performances for Manly were from Zara Nicholas, Steph Maiolo who has had a strong back-end to the season and
Bec Beath who is looking more comfortable in the team with every game. Aleya Wiggins was also impressive and received the Coaches Award with Jess Fowler, Jess Shanahan, Aleya Wiggins and Emma Williams the touchdown scorers.
Training continues for Premier League and Division 1 this Tuesday 2nd October at James Morgan Reserve from 6.15pm. The Premier League team will also be training on Friday 5th October in a lead-up to their Sunday game against the Penrith Panthers.

Vawdon Cup Friday 14th Sept Review 15.09.12
The Manly Sea Eagles were sitting in third place and up against the Wollongong Devils who were top of the table and 2011 Champions. The venue for this Vawdon Cup Round 6 clash was the Tempe Velodrome. Manly were welcoming back Nicky Albery to their line-up for the first time in 2012, however were missing Elesha Dougall and Justine Johnston. Conditions were cool and dry and the game commenced with both teams keen to promote the ball and get an early advantage. The Devils were looking to their main playmaker Jess McCall to give them an early advantage. However it was the Sea Eagles through Danni Davis that opened the scoring. However Wollongong hit back and then took a 2-1 lead into half time.
In the second half Manly’s Captain Sarah Peattie was looking to inspire the team, and the Sea Eagles had multiple opportunities to score. Danni Davis did this to even up the game at 2-2, before the Devils scored again to take the win 3-2. For Manly it was a mixed performance, with poor execution limiting the team to just the two touchdowns. It was another strong performance by Danni Davis, taking out the Hogs Breath Player of the Match. Additionally, Sam Rodgers put on a very impressive performance. Sarah Peattie, Hannah Dyball and Brittney McLeod were also good for the Sea Eagles.

Vawdon Cup Super Sunday Review 10.09.12
The first Super Sunday of the year was held at Nolans Reserve, Manly Vale with MWTA hosting its first Vawdon Cup. The Manly Women’s Premier League were up against the Canterbury Bulldogs and West Magpies, and were very keen to continue their undefeated start to the season. For the Manly team Yasmin Meakes was making her well-deserved Premier League debut after a number of dominant performances for the Division 1 team. The Sea Eagles and Bulldogs game got underway with a large crowd cheering the local team on. The Bulldogs were first to score taking a 1-0 lead after getting back to back penalties from the tap off. However Manly hit back from their first use of the ball with Rachael Cleave diving to even the score. It wasn’t until the 14th minute mark when the Sea Eagles took a 2-1 lead when Laura Peattie scooped through linking up with Jenna Hitch.
The Bulldogs were looking to hit back however strong middle defence from Brittney McLeod, Rachael Cleave and Jenna Hitch was holding them out. After 16 minutes Manly extended their lead to 3-1 with Danni Davis and Sarah Peattie combining for Sam Rodgers to outpace the defence. Then 2 minutes later Rachael Cleave and Danni Davis combined before Brittney McLeod “motorbike” stepped the defence diving down to give the Sea Eagles a 4-1 half-time lead.
In the second half the Bulldogs were first to score through a good diving touchdown to Louise Winchester. However the Sea Eagles were determined to continue their scoring and were full of running. Then after repeat sets on the line Laura Peattie scored yet another one of her classy individual efforts. It was now 5-2 and 3 minutes later the lead was extended when Jenna Hitch and Danni Davis combined setting up Holly Shorter who finished well in the corner.
The Sea Eagles were now full of confidence throwing the ball around with purpose. At the mid-way section of the second half Captain Sarah Peattie scooped through and looked to link up with a Manly team-mate. Just when it looked like Holly Shorter would get her second touchdown, Elesha Dougall took the honours knocking Holly off her feet. Four minutes later Sarah Peattie was at it again, this time scoring herself. It was now 8-2 with the Bulldogs scoring in the final minute to make it 8-3 to the Sea Eagles.
For Manly it was a great performance with the entire team playing strongly resulting in eight different touchdown scorers. Standouts were a plenty – Danni Davis looked dangerous all game, Laura Peattie continued her strong start to the season and Rachael Cleave played her best game of 2012. Additionally Charmayne Nathan once again performed strongly. Chloe Cheney in her second game of Premier League didn’t put a foot wrong and played a very technically solid game.
The next match for Manly was against the Wests Magpies – a game that is always a close battle. The Sea Eagles team remained unchanged from their game against the Bulldogs and their challenge was to replicate that performance. For Wests they were coming off a 9-5 loss to Wallsend so were more than capable of scoring touchdowns.
The game got underway with the Sea Eagles first to score after 5 minutes with Laura & Sarah Peattie combining for Laura to score. 3 minutes later they scored again when Danni Davis and Rachael Cleave linked up with Holly Shorter scoring. However for the remainder of the half it was a dead-lock, with both team unable to score until Wests went in just on half-time to be down 2-1.
In the second half Wests were faster out of the blocks and took a 3-2 lead with back to back touchdowns. Then after 12 minutes Manly hit back after continual pressure with the trio of Danni Davis, Rachael Cleave and Laura Peattie combining to set-up Alex Wallace who finished in style in the corner.
It was now 3-3 and with 5 minutes remaining in the game Elesha Dougall showed her class taking control in the middle of the field setting up Danni Davis to make it 4-3. However credit to the Magpies they hit back to even it up once again. Manly were now desperate to get the win with less than a minute remaining. Captain Sarah Peattie, Danni Davis and Elesha Dougall were working together looking to crack the Wests defence. Then Sarah Peattie scooped through beating her defender – all of the local crowd held its breath until Jenna Hitch did some amazing footwork to shake off her defender over the line to score the winning touchdown, just a few seconds before the hooter for full time sounded.
It was another close game between these two teams and full credit to Wests for such a strong performance. For Manly there were five different touchdown scorers, with Sarah Peattie the Player of the Match. Jenna Hitch was close behind her with another strong performance in defence and taking a good leadership role in attack. Elesha Dougall once again had a strong game, along with Hannah Dyball who looks very much settled in the Premier League team. Additionally Sam Rodgers, Alex Wallace, Yasmin Meaks and Chloe Cheney all played their part well.
The Sea Eagles are now sitting second on the Vawdon Cup table and meet the 2011 Champions in the Wollongong Devils this Friday evening at the Tempe Velodrome in a top of the table clash.
In Division 1 it was a very under par performance by the Manly team, letting slip a three touchdown lead to draw with the Parramatta Eels 5-5. Steph Maiolo scored two touchdowns with Tayla Clifford, Chloe Butcher and Zara Nicholas the best performers. It was a pleasing performance for Bec Beath who made her debut for the Sea Eagles. The team meet the Wests Magpies on Friday evening at Doyle Ground, North Parramatta in a game they will most definitely be looking to win.

Vawdon Cup Round 3 Review 01.09.12
Premier League returned to Bankstown for their Round 3 fixture against their Sydney Scorpions counterparts in the Parramatta Eels. The Sea Eagles line-up this week saw a Premier League debut for the extremely talented Chloe Cheney. Chloe has been performing strongly for the Manly Division 1 team and was a stand-out in the recent 15's All Schools tournament with a dominant performance in the final. Manly welcomed back Rachael Cleave, with Jenna Hitch and Brittney McLeod missing from last weeks line-up. Conditions at Bankstown were cool with some rain falling about an hour before tap-off. The game started with the Manly team looking to promote the ball where possible and the Eels defending well. Unfortunately for the Sea Eagles there was plenty of handling errors due to a lack of communication. Mid-way through the first half the Eels were the first ones to get on scoreboard taking a 1-0 lead. Manly looked to hit back and were creating a number of opportunities but unable to execute the final pass. At the half time break Parramatta led 1-0.
In the second half the aim for the Sea Eagles was more communication and execute their game plan. Parramatta were looking to extend their lead and did get a number of opportunities, however the Manly defence held strongly. Alex Wallace then scored two back-to-back touchdowns to make it 2-1 with 10 minutes remaining. The Eels were on the attack once again with only a few minutes remaining however once again the Sea Eagles defence was working hard (up against a 8-4 penalty count) to hold out the opposition. A solid drive from their line to the other end of the field resulted in Hogs Breath Player of the Match Charmayne Nathan scoring a third touchdown for the team, securing a 3-1 victory for Manly. Justine Johnston and Alex Wallace both had good games, with Chloe Cheney having a very solid debut. Additionally Sarah Peattie and Danni Davis looked good in patches.
Round 4 & 5 of Vawdon Cup takes place at Nolans Reserve, North Manly on Sunday 9th September with the Premier League up against the Canterbury Bulldogs and West Magpies. In Division 1 the team will meet the Parramatta Eels, and will be keen to bounce back after their loss to Norths.
There were no games in Division 1 this week with a bye round scheduled for the division.

Vawdon Cup Round 2 Review 25.08.12
Round 2 of the Vawdon Cup took place with the Manly Premier League and Division 1 teams playing at Bankstown. The Premier League girls were up against the Varsity Stingers and in Division 1 the young Manly team met one of the top sides in the Northern Suburbs Bears. For the Manly team tonight Zara Nicholas was making her Premier League debut and the team would be keen to get their first win of the season after a draw during Round 1. The game tapped off with Varsity full of running and having the better of the early exchanges and took a 1-0 lead after a break from half way. However Manly hit back when Justine Johnston found Zara Nicholas who scored in the corner. Manly were looking to get the next touchdown however it was once again Varsity who took the lead, now up 2-1. The Manly team weren’t looking at their best however a nice scoop from Elesha Dougall found Captain Sarah Peattie who switched nicely to even it up.
The half time break was a good chance for the Sea Eagles to re-group, and that they did coming out in the second half looking like a completely different team. First to score in the second half was Charmayne Nathan through a nice play with Laura Peattie. Then a Georgia Wallace drive led to Elesha Dougall diving to score. It was now 4-2 and Manly were running and into full swing. Not long after Danni Davis went from half and found Sarah Peattie for her second of the night. It was then great lead-up play from once again the form player in the Manly ranks, Elesha Dougall, as she teamed up with Laura Peattie who found debutant Zara Nicholas for her second.
It was now 6-2 and the Sea Eagles fast tempo game was causing problems for the Varsity team. Sam Rodgers and Brittney McLeod then put on a great wrap for Brittney to score – capping off an impressive game for both players. With a minute remaining Sarah Peattie grabbed her hat-trick for the night thought a quickie with Elesha Dougall, making the final score 8-2. Overall a fantastic second half of running touch and nice ball movement. There were pleasing performances all over the park; Zara Nicholas had a very strong debut, Elesha Dougall continues to impress, Sarah Peattie was back to her best, Hannah Dyball once again looked at home in the middle, and Holly Shorter and Alex Wallace looked safe out wide.

Vawdon Cup Round 1 Review 17.08.12
The much anticipated commencement to the 2012 Vawdon Cup took place this evening across Sydney with the Wollongong Devils the reigning title holders in the Women’s Premier League division. Congratulations must go to NSWTA who have most definitely been working extremely hard to improve the competition, and this year will no doubt be the same with a number of new venues being introduced. Sunday 9th September promises to be an exciting date for the Manly Warringah club, hosting their first Vawdon Cup on their home turf.
In the Women’s Premier League division three of the first round games took place at the newly renovated David Phillips Sports Fields at the University of NSW. First-up for the Manly Sea Eagles was up against the highly fancied Eastern Suburbs Roosters. For the Sea Eagles Hannah Dyball was making her well-deserved Premier League debut. Additionally Charmayne Nathan made her first appearance after an extremely impressive off-season returning from a serious knee injury. The conditions for tap-off were very cold and windy, but both teams would be still looking to play attacking touch.
The Roosters had the tap off and from the outset were looking to their main strike players to take control. NSW & Australian reps Kristin Boss, Maddi Studdon, and the talented Ash Quinlan were looking to lead their team and the Roosters were the ones to take a 1-0 lead. This didn’t alarm the Sea Eagles and they continued to run the ball and were looking to put pressure on the Roosters defence. Elesha Dougall was looking sharp and dangerous in attack, with Danni Davis starting the season well where she left off at State Cup. It remained 1-0 at the break.
In the second half the Sea Eagles were full of running and hit back when Charmayne Nathan found Georgia Wallace who scored. Manly then took at 2-1 lead when Laura Peattie scored mid-way through the half with a nice dive. The Sea Eagles kept running and then looked to extend their lead and were sure they’d scored via a Danni Davis long ball who found Alex Wallace diving in the corner. However the Referees called the touch was made and the margin remained one. Kristin Boss was looking to get the Roosters an equaliser however the Manly defence remained strong. Then with less than 60 seconds remaining the Roosters drove nicely down the field and got the all-important touchdown to even it up 2-2. With time just about up Manly nearly scored from the tap off with Georgia Wallace stepping two players and just getting touched as she reached out for the score line.
So a draw first up and the performance was a confidence building one for the young Manly team. Stand out performances were all across the park; including middles Brittney McLeod, Sarah Peattie, Rachael Cleave and Elesha Dougall. Charmayne Nathan was a constant threat with the ball, and Hannah Dyball looked at home in the middle on her debut. Out wide Sam Rodgers once again displayed her speed at vital times with Alex and Georgia Wallace both having strong performances. Justine Johnston was a strong game with Holly Shorter and Jenna Hitch adding to the strong Sea Eagles performance. Next week the Sea Eagles are up against the Varsity Stingers which will be a tough game.
In other games the Wollongong Devils were too strong against the Wests Magpies winning 8-1, Wallsend beat Varsity 4-2, Penrith were too good for Taren Point taking it out 6-2 and the Parramatta Eels were extremely unlucky against the Louise Winchester led Canterbury Bulldogs going down by 5-4 in the final moments of the game.
