Manly Sea Eagles vs Penrith Panthers Match Report 21.10.11

Bankstown Touch was the host for the first week of finals in the 2011 Vawdon Cup.  In Premier League the two big improvers of 2011 and arguably two young teams of the future went head-to-head.  Congratulations to the Penrith Panthers as they made it three wins in a row against the Sea Eagles after defeating them in the 2010 Vawdon Cup and only two weeks ago in the Super Sunday at Campbelltown.  For Manly there were too many errors and yet another large penalty count of 9-3 against.  However full credit to the young Penrith team who have most definitely earned the right to be a Top 4 Vawdon Cup team this season.  Their speed and attacking flair saw them take a first half lead of 3-1 until Manly hit back through a Tina Clancy double.  The first via a Danni Davis long ball and then via Emma Crerar.  Then Manly evened it up again through Danni Davis linking up with Brittney McLeod to make it 3-3 at the break. Unfortunately for the Sea Eagles the second half was a non scoring event, with Penrith scoring 4 touchdowns to take the win 7-3.  For Manly there were limited stand-out performances, however once again Georgia Wallace showed excellent grit and determination, Tina Clancy was extremely solid and yet again Danni Davis and Sarah Peattie were two of Manly's best.   The squad can now look forward to preparing for their State Cup campaign, one which they will be looking to improve on from their semi final appearance in 2010.

In Division 1 the Manly girls took on the Central Coast Dolphins and in a thrilling drop-off took the win by 3-2.  There were strong performances all over the park and it's a fantastic achievement to be in week two of the finals in the girls first Vawdon Cup together.  Congratulations to Coaches Jamie Clifford and Keith Smith on an extremely successful Vawdon Cup.

Manly Sea Eagles Premier League & Division One March Into Finals 15.10.11
It was a night of great results for both the Sea Eagles Premier League and Division One teams at Tempe on Friday 14th October.  For the Premier League it was a match-up between the Sea Eagles and the Wests Magpies, the first time the teams had met since the Sea Eagles knocked out the Magpies in the 2010 State Cup Quarter Final.

The Manly girls started the game will all guns blazing up 3-1 at half time.  They then scored the next two touchdowns to take a commanding 5-2 lead.  However full credit to West's they hit back to be down by one making it 5-4.  However the Sea Eagles booked their place in the finals when they finished off the game by 6-4.   This sets up a rematch from last week for the Sea Eagles, up against the Penrith Panthers in the First Elimination Final and Easts Roosters vs Wests Magpies will play each other in the Second Elimination Final.  Penrith will be full of confidence after beating Wallsend Wolves 5-4 in their final Vawdon Cup round game and getting the better of the Sea Eagles in their past two outings.

In Division One the young Manly Sea Eagles defeated the UNSW Bullets 6-1 also booking aVawdon Cup finals spot for next week at Bankstown.  Emma Williams was their standout player gettting the Player of the Match award.  In their final the girls will be up against the Central Coast Dolphins.  Well done to Coaches Jamie Clifford and Keith Smith, and the entire team for a well deserved finals appearance in their first year together.  This holds the team in good stead for the State Cup 20's division in which the majority of them will be competing in.

Manly Sea Eagles vs Penrith Panthers – Match Report 10.10.11
Vawdon Cup Round 1 (Postponed Round) – Sunday 9th October

Super Sunday at Campbelltown was the venue and due to recent poor weather all touchies would have been pleased to wake up to the news on Sunday morning that the fields were open and the day would go ahead.

Manly were coming off an excellent win against Wallsend and their first game against Penrith would most definitely be a tough one. The warm-up was a good one for Manly and the team went onto the attack early with Sarah Peattie scooping through but unable to link up with support. However the Panthers were the first to score only for Danni Davis to find Laura Shorter to even it up at 1-1.

Already the game was an end to end affair and Manly were next to score when a Rachael Cleave long ball found winger Jess Beakey who scored. However Penrith were most definitely full of running and capitalised on the majority of Manly’s most experienced players having very rare poor games, scoring again. Manly did hit back when Sarah Peattie scooped through to find Emma Crerar and this made the score 3-2. But following the pattern of the game Penrith once again scored when a Manly defender lost her footing to even it up.

Half time was approaching and it was pretty evident the Sea Eagles hadn’t arrived with their A game. That said Rachael Cleave did score again to give Manly the lead 4-3, however due to some extremely poor defensive reads Penrith scored the next three touchdowns before the break to make it 4-6.

The second half got underway with Penrith adding to their tally making it 4-7. However Manly finally stepped up and scored the next three touchdowns to even it up at 7-7. First Sarah Peattie scored, then Elesha Dougal found Laura Shorter and then Laura Peattie dived over to score.

However just when it looked as it Manly could go on with the win the Panthers scored the next two touchdowns to take out the game 7-9. Full credit to Penrith who turned up with the right attitude and wanted the win more than the Sea Eagles. For the Manly it was their most disappointing performance in recent seasons with defensive policies seemingly not existence. Good performances for Manly were limited with Player of the Season Award points now behind closed doors for the final few weeks.

Manly Sea Eagles vs Easts Roosters – Match Report 10.10.11
Vawdon Cup Round 8 – Sunday 9th October

The Sea Eagles second game for the Sunday was up against one of the top teams in the Easts Roosters. After the earlier disappointing loss to Penrith it would a good test to see how the team would bounce back. The Roosters won the toss and went on the attack early with the Sea Eagles holding them out. Manly were making excellent field position and their confidence levels were looking extremely positive compared to the earlier game in the day.

However the game took a twist early on when Manly had a player sent for a period of time (as opposed to a warning or forced sub) and they had to rely on five players defending their line for a number of consecutive sets. The Roosters scored on the wing to take the lead 1-0. Manly were fired up and determined to hit back and they did so with five players when Danni Davis found Laura Shorter who used her excellent speed to scoot down the sideline to score.

Manly were looking a different team to earlier in the day with Georgia Wallace having a strong game along with Rachael Cleave, getting the team going forward and defending strongly. When Jenna Hitch scooped through to find Laura Shorter it looked as if she had scored, only to be called as being touched. Then right on half time the Roosters did score, when Jenna Hitch made the touch, but the officials called the ball down and the Roosters took a handy 2-1 lead into half time.

The talk at half time was positive with Manly definitely feeling they were the better team although the scoreboard differed. It would take a big effort in the second half to get the win they were after. After the break the Roosters scored three touchdowns before Manly hit back twice – firstly through Laura Peattie who dived to score and then Georgia Wallace who scored after a nice pass from Rachael Cleave.

Manly were finishing strongly however it was too little too late and the Roosters took the win and the points by 5-3. For the Sea Eagles it was a much improved performance however still not at the level required from this team. The girls will be keen to get back to winning ways when they meet the West’s Magpies on Friday night at Tempe Field 1 – no better way to get their attitude right for a victory.

Manly Sea Eagles vs Wallsend Wolves – Match Report  01.10.11
Vawdon Cup Round 7 – Friday 30th September

Video Highlights below or via ManlyWomensTouch YouTube Channel

Vawdon Cup Round 7 had arrived and the Manly Sea Eagles were up against the Wallsend Wolves at Ann Aquilina Reserve, home of Blacktown Touch.  Well done to NSWTA who are providing some excellent venues for Vawdon Cup and Ann Aquilina Reserve is no exception, offering the teams excellent facilities.

Manly were coming off a mixed performance against the Parramatta Eels, and tonight were determined for a strong showing against one of the competitions stronger teams.

Wallsend won the toss and commenced with the ball attacking the line early.  However Manly held them out and nice ball movement saw them easily get out of their half.  Within two minutes Manly were on the board with a classy individual touchdown to Captain Sarah Peattie, throwing a number of dummies with the defence holding off.

It was the perfect start for Manly and the energy levels in the sub-box were excellent.  The Sea Eagles were looking to set the pattern for the game and their aggressive shooting defence was causing Wallsend problems. Manly were unlucky to extend their lead after 6 minutes when Danni Davis and Laura Peattie combined nicely only for Laura to be touched just before the score-line.

However it was Wallsend that hit back on the 8 minute mark after receiving back to back sets on the Manly score-line.  The battle of field position continued with the Sea Eagles continuing to make good territory, just unable to capitalise with the final pass going to ground on a number of occasions.  Then against the run of play Wallsend scored again to take the lead 2-1.

Manly were determined to step it up and when Jenna Hitch went from acting half she just failed to find a team-mate to even up the score.  Then some nice work between Elesha Dougal and Laura Peattie looked to have set-up a touchdown for Laura however the touch was called before the grounding of the ball.  For Manly Emma Crerar and Georgia Wallace were working extremely hard in defence and attack – working for their team-mates getting the ball up field.

With the first half nearly over Manly were extremely wary that they couldn’t let Wallsend score again and take a two touchdown lead.  However a number of Sea Eagles line attacks once again just came up short.  Then right on the stroke of half time, Manly’s leader in the Player of the Season Award showed exactly why – with Danni Davis scooping from acting half and linking up with Alex Wallace to even it up just as the hooter was about to sound.

The half time talk was extremely positive and Manly knew they had much of the better first half.  More composure was needed at time in attack, their defence had to remain aggressive, and they had confidence their fitness would help them in the backend of the game.

The second half started with Manly on the attack and it looked like they had scored from the tap off only for the last pass from Rachael Cleave to be called late.  Four minutes later Jenna Hitch once again went through from acting half, unfortunately unable to find  her support players.  The Sea Eagles were now in full swing and Wallsend were looking as if they were tiring with the pace of the game.

Once again Manly were close to scoring when Sarah Peattie went through, and the talk and energy in the box remained positive.  Then they finally cracked Wallsend with a touch of brilliance by Nicky Albery who turned the defender inside out a number of times to scoop past and link up with Alex Wallace who scored her second of the night.

Manly were now 3-2 up and determined to go on from here and that’s exactly what they did.  Firstly on the 27th minute mark when Laura Peattie added to her excellent individual touchdown tally of late, scoring another superb low diving touchdown. Then 3 minutes later a great drive from Rachael Cleave set it up perfectly for Justine Johnston to easily scooped through, finding Rachael backing up and scoring the touchdown to make it 5-2.

The Sea Eagles were finishing strongly and when Nicky Albery once again scooped and found Sarah Peattie it looked like Manly had scored again.  However to the disbelief of all players (especially the defender) a touch was called.  However with a couple of minutes remaining excellent team lead-up play resulted in Laura Peattie scoring her second touchdown of the night taking the tally to a comprehensive 6-2 victory.

Overall a very pleasing result for the Manly team with a number of excellent performances: Brittney McLeod had a strong game driving the ball very well; Jenna Hitch bounced back to great form; Georgia Wallace continues to impress and it’s amazing she’s only played a hand-full of Premier League games (a star of the future no doubt).  Also the ever reliable Sarah Peattie and Danni Davis once again led from the front; and the class of Nicky Albery was evident for all to see when she got her opportunity in attack.

The win tonight secures the Sea Eagles in the top four for another week, equal third with the Roosters at present.  Next Sunday once again bring some great match-ups with Manly meeting the speed of Penrith and then the Roosters in a double header at Campbelltown.

In Division 1, the Manly girls got another good win, this time over the Central Coast Dolphins by 2-1.  Well done to Shellie Davis who took out the Richardson & Wrench Real Estate (Seaforth/Balgowlah) Player of the Match.  The girls will have three games next weekend at the Super Sunday at Campbelltown Touch.

Manly Sea Eagles vs Parramatta Eels Match Review 24.09.11
Vawdon Cup Round 6 – Friday 23rd September
Parramatta was the venue tonight for the Vawdon Cup Round 6 clash between the Manly Sea Eagles and Parramatta Eels. Manly were looking to consolidate their position in the top 4 whilst the Eels were looking for their first win of the season. The Manly team welcomed Nicky Albery who was making her debut for the Maroon & Whites after being sidelined with an ankle injury sustained in a pre-season trial against Parramatta at the same ground.

Parramatta took an early lead 1-0 when a scoop from acting half resulted in a touchdown. However Manly hit back when Danni Davis threw a nice pass finding Nicky Albery to level up the scores.

Unfortunately for Manly they were not completing their sets and a few errors appeared in their game. Before half time Rachael Cleave went through a hole to make it 2-1 at the break.

In the second half Captain Sarah Peattie continued her fine start to the season by scoring and then Jess Beakey also scored to give Manly a buffer of 4-1. However full credit to the Eels they hit back to make it 4-2 to Manly. Then to finish off the game Laura and Sarah Peattie teamed up with Laura scoring to make the final score to 5-2.

It wasn't the best performance for the Sea Eagles however they got the win they were after. A great concern was the penalty count which favored Parramatta by 10-2. Best performers for Manly included Rachael Cleave, Sarah Peattie, and Tina Clancy. Whilst also very strong were Justine Johnston and Jess Beakey who had very positive vocal games.

Congratulations to Manly's young Division 1 team who beat Parramatta Eels 5-2. Many of the girls will be playing in Manly's State Cup 20's team and this Vawdon Cup campaign is providing excellent experience for them. Lisa Fiaola was their Player of the Match.

Manly's next match is a big one, up against the Wallsend Wolves at Blacktown with a 8.40pm tap-off. This weeks training and preparation will focus on ensuring a strong performance is delivered on Friday night.

Manly Sea Eagles vs Canterbury Bulldogs Match Review 11.09.11
Vawdon Cup Round 5 – Sunday 11th September

The second game of the double header was up against the State Cup Champions and arguably the best club team in Australia, the Canterbury Bulldogs. Manly tapped off and early on it was clear they meant business and were super determined to match it with the classy Bulldogs. The Sea Eagles took the lead 1-0 when a Danni Davis long ball found Georgia Wallace who scored. The Bulldogs looked to hit back however the Manly defence was holding intact with their Sea Eagles sub box full of positive energy. Manly were unlucky not to double their tally when Elesha Dougal scooped through from acting half but got touched. Then Manly did double their lead with Laura Peattie scoring a superb individual touchdown putting on an incredible step and low dive beating two Bulldogs defenders.

Manly were leading 2-0 but knew the Bulldogs would be looking to hit-back. Once again Manly were displaying excellent running touch looking to score at every opportunity. However the Bulldogs hit back through Louise Winchester to narrow the gap by one. Manly didn’t go into their shell and another excellent Danni Davis long ball resulted in Georgia Wallace just getting touched. The Blue & Whites scored again before half time and it was locked up at 2-2.

In the second half the Bulldogs came out firing scoring two back-to-back touchdowns to take a 4-2 lead. The second touchdown on the back of five repeat sets on the Manly line. The Sea Eagles defence finally gave way but not after amazing grit and determination was displayed by all players on the field including Brittney McLeod, Rachael Cleave, Sarah Peattie and Justine Johnston.

However Manly weren’t ready to lay down and showing fantastic character and attitude they battled back to 4-4. Sarah and Laura Peattie combined in a classy touchdown to Laura. Then Georgia Wallace scored in the corner to even it up. The game was now there for the taking and both teams trying gallantly for the win. With only a few minutes to go it looked like Manly would take it when Elesha Dougal went from acting half but couldn’t find support. Then Sarah and Laura combined again with Sarah just getting touched before scoring.

The game ended 4-4 with Manly happy with their performance but feeling they played the better touch and deserved the win. For Manly there were strong performances all across the park, with Laura Peattie and Jenna Hitch having their best games of this campaign. Justine Johnston and Georgia Wallace were also very good. Most pleasing was the excellent attitude Manly displayed in coming back from two touchdowns in the second half.

Some of the team now get a well-earned rest with no games next Friday. However for many of the younger girls their attention now turns to the TFA 18’s Nationals to be held in Caloundra, Queensland, next week. For the Sea Eagles their next game will be against the Parramatta Eels at the Doyle Ground, North Parramatta on Friday 23rd at 7.50pm tap off. The girls will be keen to keep up their great start to the season and hold onto their position in the top four on the table.

Manly Sea Eagles vs Wollongong Devils Match Review 11.09.11
Vawdon Cup Round 4 – Sunday 11th September

Penrith was the venue for the first double header of the Vawdon Cup, with fine sunny conditions greeting the teams. Both Wollongong and Manly were going into this game with two wins from as many outings, with the Sea Eagles keen for a positive performance welcoming back Elesha Dougal for her first Vawdon Cup game in 2011. The game commenced with both teams trying to get the early advantage through good field position. Within five minutes and from within their own half Wollongong took the lead as Jess McCall broke through and scored. However before too long the Sea Eagles hit back with Danni Davis continuing her fine form of late to make it 1-1.

Elesha Dougal then set-up for Emma Crearar who scored for Manly to take the lead 2-1. The Manly running game seemed to be hurting the Devils and when Rachael Cleave played through an offside defender Manly jumped to a 3-1 lead. The Sea Eagles were dominating and playing excellent touch in attack and defence. Danni Davis was then involved again and her long ball found Holly Shorter to make it 4-1. Wollongong looked to be struggling but to their credit they hit back with two touchdowns out wide due to good involvement from Nicole Beck. Then just before half time Manly scored again when Captain Sarah Peattie threw a long ball finding Jess Beakey to make it 5-3.

The half time talk was positive with the team keen to continue their fast attack and good ball movement. Unfortunately early in the second half Manly had a player sent for a period of time with Wollongong taking full advantage and scoring. The game tempo had really stepped up now with both teams going end to end playing great attacking touch. A sensational Danni Davis long ball saw the lead go to 6-4, however Nicole Beck for the Devils set-up another touchdown to bring back the deficit to one.

Wollongong were finishing strongly and when they scored back to back touchdowns they took the lead 7-6. Manly were once again down a player with another period of time and Wollongong scored to finish the game 8-6.

Well done to the Manly team for their excellent attitude and commitment. Unfortunately their second half wasn’t as good as the first however they will most definitely learn from the experience. For Manly there were many outstanding performances – Elesha Dougal in her first game was very good, so too was Justine Johnston. Rachael Cleave once again led from the front and taking out Player of the Match was Danni Davis who is growing in confidence and stature each week.

Wollongong Devils 8 defeated Manly Sea Eagles 6

Manly Sea Eagles vs Varsity Stingers Match Review 05.09.11
Bankstown was once again the venue, this time for Round Three of the 2011 Vawdon Cup. The Sea Eagles would be looking to add to their first up victory against Taren Point the week prior, whilst Varsity would be hoping to get their first win of the campaign.

Another good warm-up saw the Manly girls ready for action and from the outset their swarming defence was putting pressure on the Varsity team. Field possession was most definitely in the favour of the Sea Eagles however simple errors were preventing them from opening the scoring. Mid-way through the first half and on one of the only occasions when Varsity approached the Manly score line, Varsity went to the lead as one of their speedsters scooped from half and found a team mate.

The remainder of the first half was similar to the opening stanza with Manly having the overwhelming majority of the ball in attacking positions but unable to convert this into touchdowns. The talk at the break was positive with the Sea Eagles defence working very hard to restrict Varsity to any good attacking field position.

The second half looked a slight improvement for Manly as Sarah Peattie scored early on, then Danni Davis went from acting-half only to find Georgia Wallace who was just touched before scoring. When Emma Crerar scored Manly hit the lead 2-1. However full credit to Varsity when they evened it up again at 2-2. Then with a few minutes to go Manly’s constant attack again was rewarded when Rachael Cleave scored for Manly to take out the game by 3-2. It was definitely a poor performance in attack from Manly, with too many errors and on the back of a 1-5 penalty count this made the task for the night an even more difficult one.

On the positive side, Manly’s best players were Georgia Wallace who defended very strongly and drove the ball with purpose. Once again Captain Sarah Peattie and Danni Davis had good creative games. Emma Williams, making her Premier League debut, had a mistake free debut which was extremely pleasing. This Friday evening Manly take on the Penrith Panther at Penrith. Penrith will no doubt be looking for a win after two defeats in their first two rounds. Then on the Sunday the Sea Eagles play the top two teams in the Wollongong Devils and the Canterbury Bulldogs. Coming off a poor performance against Varsity it will be interesting to see if any changes will be made for the upcoming three big games.

Manly Sea Eagles vs Taren Point Match Review 28.08.11
After the week prior was washed out due to poor weather, Bankstown was the venue for Round Two of the 2011 Vawdon Cup. The Sea Eagles off-season has been a busy one with a number of new players joining the ranks and showing excellent potential in the lead-up to the start of the season. For the Sea Eagles Justine Johnston, Alex Wallace and Georgia Wallace were all making their debut in the Maroon and White colours.

The Manly warm-up was a good one with the team looking very focused for a strong first-up performance. The game commenced and from early on the Sea Eagles looked in tune. They scored early on through the middle via Danni Davis to make it 1-0. Then shortly after Tayla Clifford making her Premier League debut scored with good lead-up work from once again Danni Davis and the ever reliable Laura Peattie.

Unfortunately for Manly they were conceding a number of penalties and Taren Point were getting some great opportunities on the Manly score-line. However the Sea Eagles defence was extremely strong, vocal, aggressive and determined. This was tested when Georgia Wallace received a period of time, however Manly lifted and their line remained intact to the frustration of Taren Point. Tina Clancy then scored in the corner after great Manly ball movement to take the half-time score to 3-0.

The talk at half-time was very positive with Manly looking to continue their running game with the aim of putting on more touchdowns. The second half started much the same as the first however Taren Point scored before Rachael Cleave hit back to make it 4-1. The penalty count kept rising again giving Taren Point good field position. However Manly’s line defence was rock-solid with Jenna Hitch, Captain Sarah Peattie, Danni Davis, Justine Johnston and Holly Shorter all working extremely hard in the link position.

The running game continued for the Sea Eagles and when Emma Crerar gave a nice pass to Danni Davis she hit a hole to make it 5-1. Then in the final two minutes Danni Davis scored again to earn herself a hat trick and the team a bonus point taking out the game 6-1.

It was an extremely pleasing team result, built on the back of three months of solid preseason work. Disappointing was the penalty count of 14-7 in favour of Taren Point. However for Manly Danni Davis was the obvious standout scoring three touchdowns and looking the goods every time she touched the ball. Justine Johnston’s contribution for her first game for Manly was excellent – bringing great positive communication on and off the field to the team. All three debutants had solid games, in Georgia Wallace, Alex Wallace and Tayla Clifford. Additionally Sarah Peattie and Rachael Cleave both had good, mistake free games, leading by example. Special mention has to go to Nicky Albery for the overwhelming positive influence she has displayed in her short time with the club. Her positive talk and contribution from the sub box during the game was invaluable.

The team now prepare for a return visit to Bankstown at 7.50pm Friday night for a game against Varsity Stingers. Varsity will be determined to get a good result after losing to Wallsend Wolves 6-3 in their first game. Congratulations to Jamie Clifford and Keith Smith as the Division 1 team got a 4-3 win over the Ryde-Eastwood Hawks. Player of the Match Award for the game went to Lyndie Davis.
